TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — Are you a North Mississippian who does not have health care coverage? If your answer is yes, Mantachie Rural Health Care wants to help you get enrolled before an important deadline.
"We just want to give a big push to help people get enrolled by February 15 because that’s our next big deadline we’re looking at," said Joyce Johnson, the outreach and enrollment coordinator at the clinic.
Enrolling by February 15, Johnson says, will ensure coverage by March 1.
But for those who wait until the final deadline of March 31, coverage will not begin until May 1.
"There’s a little lag time in there of getting all the paperwork processed and getting them into their plan and getting their cards and starting their coverage," said Johnson.
It’s important to note after the March 31 deadline, open enrollment will close until the fall.
For those who miss the deadline or choose not to purchase insurance, when you file your taxes for 2014, there will be a penalty — a reminder some are already receiving if they have their taxes prepared by a chain tax preparation company this year.
"They’ll pay either $95 or 1 percent of their income," said Johnson.
Johnson is one of two community outreach and enrollment coordinators at the Mantachie Clinic who offer services free of charge to the public.
They are available to answer questions over the phone, through appointments and during visits to businesses and churches.
The clinic will also hold an open house on February 13 from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. for those needing assistance.
"Yes, we can enroll people and help them get their applications filled out and get that underway for them," said Johnson.
The free open house event is not only for those in Lee, Prentiss, Monroe and Itawamba counties but to those in surrounding counties.
