PALMETTO, Miss. (WTVA) -- The assistant fire chief for the Palmetto Volunteer Fire Department who was burned Friday, July 5 while fighting a fire, is now at home recovering.

The early morning fire destroyed Malone's Fish and Steak House.

Palmetto Assistant Fire Chief Wallie Bruce suffered first and second degree burns and was transported to a burn center in Jackson.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson says they are calling the fire suspicious, but are not saying it was arson.

The fire has been ruled out as being electrical.

Sheriff Johnson says if the investigation does lead to arson, and they find out who is responsible, that person could be charged with aggravated assault.
