TUPELO, Miss (WTVA) — The Tupelo City Council is considering amending the city's current smoking ban ordinance. Under the proposed new ordinance, the current policy would largely stay in place with two exceptions.
1. TOBACCO STORES Customers would be allowed to smoke in tobacco retail stores. City leaders say it would give them an opportunity to sample products the store sells.
2. E-CIGARETTE STORES Customers would be able to use E-cigarettes at stores that make at least 51% of their revenue from E-cigarettes. They would not be able to smoke tobacco products at these stores
The current smoking ban would remain in effect for other stores that sell tobacco or E-cigarretts, like grocery stores, drug stores and convenience stores. That's because these stores make less than 50% of their revenue from tobacco or E-cigarette sales. The current restriction would also remain in effect for restaurants.
Some city leaders worry allowing E-cigarettes would create confusion and make it harder to enforce the city's smoking ordinance.
The council will likely vote on whether to adopt the proposed amended ordinance next week.
