TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - Tupelo Christian Prep School right fielder Stephen Sexton signed with Northwest Community College on Tuesday. In his last two seasons with the Eagles, Sexton is batting .449 with 16 home runs and 56 RBI. In his freshman year (2010), he hit 2 more home runs, bringing his career total to 18 as he enters his senior season.
"I'm just really excited to go ahead and sign and start at the next level," Sexton told WTVA.
He's also scored 66 runs over the last two years and will play his senior season with TCPS this spring. The Eagles open up their season on Feb. 23.
"You just feel like he gives you that chance every time he steps into the box and that's what we're looking for," said Northwest assistant coach Taylor Walker.
Walker tells WTVA that he believes Sexton will be able to step in and start for the Rangers as a freshman in 2014.
"He's a versatile athlete, look for him to bounce around the outfield, the corners of the infield, but mainly we're excited about that bat he's going to bring to the lineup," said Walker.
TCPS head coach Will Lowry tells WTVA that Sexton attended a baseball camp at Mississippi State, where he set a record for fastest ball off the tee at 102 MPH in a hitting drill.
During his junior campaign in 2012, Sexton went 31-for-89 (.348) with 36 runs scored, 8 doubles, 6 home runs and 25 RBI. As a sophomore in 2011, he batted .542 (26-for-48) with 30 runs scored, 9 doubles, a triple and 10 home runs. He also drove in 31 RBI for the Eagles in 2011.
