TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — According to the city of Tupelo, scam calls have apparently started up again and seem to be targeting businesses, particularly restaurants.

Several customers have reported receiving calls recently from someone posing as a Tupelo Water & Light employee, asking for credit card information over the phone.

Customers have apparently been told if they do not give a credit card number their power service will be interrupted.

These calls are NOT being made by TW&L.

Tupelo Water & Light Director Johnny Timmons says restaurants are probably now being targeted because their bills are higher than individuals are.

"We haven't seen it in years," Timmons said. "I guess, you know, with hard times and the economy like it is, I think people are looking for other alternatives to doing these things."

If you receive a call like this, please report it to the Tupelo Police Department.

If you have questions about your service, bill or payment options, please contact TW&L at 841-6460.
