HAMILTON, Miss. (WTVA) --L.L. Mitchell is the owner of Mitch's gun shop in Hamilton and says customers are buying bullets in bundles right now.

Customer Patsy Claxton of Aberdeen is a self-proclaimed "gun totting granny" and she tried out a new handgun Friday at Mitch's firing range.

She explains why customers are in a hurry to purchase firearms.

"To stock up. It's kind of like when the first snow flake falls and everybody runs to the store to buy milk and bread," said Claxton. "It's better to be safe than sorry. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it."

Mitchell says there are many reasons there's a run on ammunition right now.

"Defense and paramilitary-type ammo is at an all-time shortage. There is probably the least amount available that I have seen and the biggest demand for it," said Mitchell.

Mitchell is getting calls from interested customers from all over the country looking to purchase certain types of bullets.

Mitchell has been in business for 32 years and said there is also high interest in buying high-powered weapons like A-K 47's.

"I think it's because they think the government is going to put some kind of big tax on it. Or either they think maybe in the future it won't be available," he stated.
