TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA)-- Chris Mims is a man on a mission.
"There is nothing better than blessing somebody," said Mims.
That mission is to help young people in his community start their college journey.
"[The first year] I helped one kid, I gave him a $500 scholarship," said Mims.
That student was Xavier Washington.
"First, it was just a blessing because I didn't expect it," said Washington. "He has his own business and let me work for him and so he said think of it more as an investment."
And this year Mims was able to "invest" in even more students.
"God blessed me a little more, so we're going to give a little more," said Mims.
A total of 4 students received the scholarship. Taylor Rogers described the moment she learned she received a scholarship, she didn't even apply for.
"He wanted to grant all of the seniors at our church with a scholarship and I was really excited because of course, we'll need help paying for books and everything, so this scholarship can go towards that," said Rogers.
So why do it?
"Someone did it for me when I was in college. I use to get checks and I didn't know where they came from, but it's a blessing when you get it," said Mims.
Paying it forward Mims says, one student at a time. Mims says next year he's going to expand the scholarship and allow all students city-wide to apply.
