TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- Just four days after birth, the baby giraffe at the Tupelo Buffalo Park has died.
Tupelo Buffalo Park's Sheila Franklin said she and other workers went to the park Sunday morning to check on the animals.
She said one of the employees found the female giraffe dead, with its parents, Patches and Tall Boy, standing next to her under a tree.
"We checked on her last night before we left the Park," Franklin said. "She appeared to be fine. She was standing next to Patches."
Patches gave birth to the baby giraffe on Wednesday. "There are no obvious signs of the cause of death," Franklin said.
Park employees are bringing it to Mississippi State's College of Veterinary Medicine for a necropsy.
"Even though she was with us for a short time, we loved her ever since we discovered Patches was pregnant," Franklin said.
Employees had a naming contest for the baby giraffe. Franklin said they'll keep it going and will have a marker erected with her name on it.
