TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- Construction could begin in a matter of weeks on a multi-million dollar bridge that will connect west Tupelo to the Barnes Crossing area.

Leaders said the $7.4 million bridge will be the size of a football field and cross the Natchez Trace as a part of the Northern Loop.

Citizens said they can't wait for the shortcut.

"I'd like to see it finished. It will be quicker to get to The Mall at Barnes Crossing," said Ken Keith.

"You know, I could get on here (Northern Loop) on Mt. Vernon and just cross straight over because I live in the Macedonia community. That would be awesome," said Anita London.

"I'm excited. I think it will be really nice. I have family that work in that area, and I think it will be really good for them," said Carolyn Burkett.

City Council members will have to approve the bid before construction can begin. Construction will take about 16 months to complete and will begin at least 12 days after approval.

A vote by the Tupelo City Council is expected Tuesday.
