TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- Students and teachers at Thomas Street Elementary School got to experience a "Creatures of the Night" animal exhibit Wednesday.
A wildlife biologist presented an educational program to the students.
Some of the animals on display were a three-toed salamander, a straw colored fruit bat, a raccoon, possum and bobcat.
The live educational animal program is designed to teach students how to better understand the importance each one of these animals plays when it comes to the environment and food chain.
"I am trying to encourage a lot of the youth to enjoy the outdoors a little bit more than generation -M-," said Bob Tarter, wildlife biologist with Natural History Educational Company of the Midsouth. "We inspire them to try and go outside as well as advocating for a drug free lifestyle. So during college you guys can get jobs and understand how these animals live."
The students learned that the possum is the most toothed mammal in North America and has the only prehensile tail.
