TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- Overcoming the traumatic experience of losing a car and personal items to a fire became a little easier for a Tupelo woman Wednesday.
A group of local firefighters wanted to lift the spirits of Shamonica Smith.
Firefighters took up a collection and within days they were able to deliver the money to Smith.
"It was a nice thing. It meant a whole lot to me because you know at first I was sad. It's good to have people around this community that you see that care about you and everything so it meant a whole lot," Smith said.
The Tupelo Fire Department says they can't do this for everyone, but considering there we're special circumstances involving this case, they decided to spring into action and do a good deed.
"The biggest reason was that we were doing salvage and overhaul after the fire was out at her residence. We came across a letter that was written by her daughter. It was very touching and it was probably the trigger behind this event," said Captain James Cunningham.
So, for now it will be easier for Smith to purchase necessary everyday items for her children.
"The things that I went through Sunday I thought maybe I was going to go through it alone," adds Smith. "Just knowing and seeing that everybody cares that really means a lot to me. I'm still an emotional hurt but I think I will get by it day by day. I'll get stronger."
