TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- National Grandparents Day is Sunday.

Two organizations in Tupelo held a program to honor grandparents who raise their grandchildren Friday.

Dozens of grandparents came out to the event.

Bridging the Gap and Lift organizations put the luncheon together.

The main focus of the event was to talk about ways grandparents can help their grandchildren with their school work.

Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton and a representative from Tupelo Public Schools spoke at the luncheon.

The founder of Bridging the Gap says she wanted to hold this event because she knows how important grandparents are.

"I saw, first hand, the influence grandparents can have on their children," Bridging the Gap Founder Mary Marion said. "So I wanted to go and maybe do something to give back the service that (my mother) did for me and to just help other grandparents."

Marion says the number of grandparents raising their grandchildren has increased from 40,000 to 50,000 since the 2008 census.
