TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- As families brace for the rising cost of school supplies, the local community prepares to lend a helping hand.
For the third year, United Way is hosting a free Back 2 School Resource Fair.
This year the fair will be hosted in six different locations instead of one, to help families get resources closer to home.
Any child entering K-6 grade is able to attend and receive a free backpack and school supplies.
This year, organizers plan to hand out more than 5,000 backpacks.
"A lot of families who live in some of the other counties we serve could not make a trip to Tupelo because of transportation and that sort of thing. So we were asked to bring it closer to the families," said Robin Matkin, United Way.
Organizers say the backpacks would be filled with school supplies and will be handed out in the six different counties that the United Way of Northeast Mississippi serves.
"They(resource fairs) will be on two different days. We've got July 20th for Lee (Chickasaw) and Itawamba counties and July 27 at Pontotoc, Prentiss, Union and Tishomingo counties," added Matkin.
Also new this year, there is no need to pre-register.
Registration information will be collected the day of the event.
However, children do have to be present to receive the back pack. http://www.unitedwaynems.org/b2s
