TUPELO, Miss.(WTVA)-- Organizers of an annual luncheon held Tuesday in Tupelo, hope the event will continue to bring awareness to the number one killer of women.

Dozens gathered at First Baptist Church for the "Women in Red Luncheon."

The goal of the event, sponsored by North Mississippi Medical Center’s Spirit of Women, is to educate women about their risk of heart disease.

“When we talk about heart disease, vascular disease in general, I think it's important that we all consider our own personal risk. It is better to know about it up front before it starts causing symptoms and that way it is avoidable- it is preventable and treatable so that you can avoid those big bad complications down the road,” said luncheon speaker and Cardiologist Barry Mertolet, M.D.

Attendees also received information on how to prevent hearth disease which include, not smoking, consuming a healthy diet, and exercise.
