Program to help out-of-school youth

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WTVA) -- Alabama's governor has awarded a grant to give a second chance to out-of-school youth in five western counties in the state.

Governor Robert Bentley awarded $373,000 to Bevill State Community College's Second Opportunity System.

The program provides education, job training, and other assistance to help youth between the ages of 16 and 21 begin careers.

School officials expect to assist 200 participants from Fayette, Lamar, Marion, Pickens and Walker counties in the next 12 months.

Tutors will help participants prepare for the GED exam.

They will also receive short-term training on basic job skills needed to find a job or continue longer-term training for high-demand occupations at a two-year college.

Staff members also serve as mentors to will help participants build a resume, prepare for job interviews, and help with them find a job once they complete the program.
