MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WTVA) -- Alabama Governor Robert Bentley has announced a grant to promote tourism in six Alabama counties.

The funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission will help the University of Alabama Center for Economic Development create a program to promote sites in Hale, Pickens, Fayette, Lamar, Bibb and Tuscaloosa County.

the $49,995 grant will be used to promote several tourist locations including the Alabama Birding Trail, the town of Aliceville and numerous parks and trails.

State officials say the program will help travelers learn more about west Alabama to get a full picture of the state's history.
