JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) -- The Oxford and Tupelo Police Departments have recieved their state accreditation from the Mississippi Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission.

The departments were visited by the commission last year to see if they were in compliance with state standards.

Those reviews included 123 items, including a look at day-to-day operations, how cases are handled, and how evidence is collected and stored.

Both departments will be recognized at the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Conference in Charleston, South Carolina later in March.

Oxford Police Chief Joey East and Tupelo Police Chief Tony Carleton say this is the first step in trying to acheive national accreditation for their departments.
