OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) -- Two Ole Miss students have died following a two-vehicle crash in Oxford Saturday morning.
Oxford Police Capt. James Owens says it appeared one vehicle crossed over the median of Highway 6 near the Highway 7 ramp, striking another vehicle head-on at approximately 11 a.m.
Lafayette County Coroner Rocky Kennedy says driver John Wheat, 30, was airlifted to The Med in Memphis, but died shortly after 3:15 p.m.
Kennedy said passenger and sister Sarah Wheat, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both individuals were headed westbound in the vehicle that was struck.
Owens said the driver of the vehicle which swerved into the wrong lane was transported to a local hospital and treated for moderate injuries.
Ole Miss Dean of Students Sparky Reardon confirms both individuals were students at the university.
"We fully realize the close nature of the Ole Miss family and everyone is affected by these things. We will make every service available to family members and let them know they're in our thoughts and prayers," Reardon said.
