Three charged in Ole Miss student's death

OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) -- Three people have been charged with capital murder in the shooting death of an Ole Miss graduate student.

Lafayette County investigators say they have charged Steven Matthew Wilbanks, 22, of North Carolina, Derrick Boone, 23, of Laurel and Joseph Lyons, 20, of Houston, Texas were formally charged on Thursday.

Ole Miss officials say issued a statement saying Wilbanks and Boone are currently enrolled at the school.

Lyons has not been enrolled at Ole Miss since the spring of 2011.

The men are charged with the death of Zach McClendon, 25, of Gulfport. Lafayette County Deputies found Mclendan’s body with a single gunshot wound in an apartment on County Road 140 in the College Hill community. Deputies had gone to McClendan's home to check on his welfare around 3 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Investigators are not releasing further details on the investigation, but tell WTVA burglary is the underlying felony to the capital murder charge.

All three men are currently being held in the Lafayette County jail.
