OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) -- The city's Planning Commission has approved plans for a multi-unit residential and general business complex to be built near downtown.

The new complex will be located on Jackson Street just west of the Square and downtown.

"We have been working on this particular building plan for about six months now. It just got approved last night. We've been buying up the land that the building is going to be sitting on for the last five years," said developer William Ashley.

The area that will be called Jackson Row.

Ashley believes that this particular stretch of road serves as the gateway to downtown and would be a great place to have the amenities he wants to offer.

"We're going to put ten stores here, a restaurant, a coffee shop, a gym and have a high-end apartment complex on top of it. I think it will really define the gateway area here, definitely bring more walking traffic here too," said Ashley.

Grant Lankford is an Oxford resident that thought that this is not only a good idea but a necessity.

"Well, honestly, with the influx of incoming freshmen, I know the class sizes are getting bigger each year. To be honest with you, we need things like this. This is awesome for the economy and even more than that, awesome for the incoming students to get used to," said Lankford.

The apartments will be able to serve 200-225 residents, and Ashley believes that downtown and the Square will benefit very much from this project.
