OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) -- A Texas man will serve 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of DUI causing death during a court hearing Monday morning in Oxford.

District Attorney Ben Creekmore says John Howard Strickland, 22, of San Antonio faced charges in an October 27, 2012 traffic accident that claimed the lives of John, 30, and Sarah Wheat, 24.

Authorities say the Wheats were brother and sister from Maryland, and like Strickland, were students at Ole Miss.

The accident happened on Highway 278 near the Highway 7 interchange.

Authorities say Strickland was under the influence of narcotics at the time of the accident.

Judge Andrew Howorth sentenced Strickland to 25 years with 13 years suspended.
