OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) — Former Ole Miss basketball star Marshall Henderson has created a stir following his comments on social media Monday about ESPN's coverage of openly gay football player Michael Sam being drafted by a pro football team.

Henderson tweeted he was boycotting the cable network's "Sportscenter" program because of the coverage.

The expletive-laced tweet had the hashtag #SICKENING.

Henderson later apologized on Twitter.  He wrote the tweet was aimed at helping a friend of his, a psychology major who is gay, seeking responses "to see how people react when others say things or act a certain way against another group of people."

The initial comment prompted a strong response on Twitter from Ole Miss Athletics Director Ross Bjork.

Bjork said he was disappointed in the comment and did not condone it.

"We use significant resources to educate our student-athletes about respect and dignity for all people, and unfortunately, not everyone gets it," Bjork tweeted.
