OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) -- Federal and local authorities continue to investigate what they thought was a suspicious package left under what one law enforcement member says was "suspicious circumstances."

At this point, though, the scene has been cleared and Oxford Police Deputy Chief Kevin Stark says nothing was found inside the box.

Stark says the department received a call at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday regarding a suspicious package in the parking lot of the Malco Theatres building/former Oxford Mall.

He says the department is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to determine its origin.

The Tupelo Police Department Bomb Squad was also dispatched, which checked the package and deemed it safe.

The Oxford Police Department and The University Police Department are continuing to investigate the incident.
