OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) -- Aldermen in Oxford met with a tourism strategist Thursday.
Berkeley Young has been working on gathering research about the city for the past year.
"Oxford is an amazing place to visit. Great shopping, great dining, incredible history, cultural arts history — it's incredible. People love to come visit here, and of course, there is that little thing called Ole Miss," said Young.
It was established that Oxford has a lot of appeal to tourists, but the meeting's focus was on improving tourism.
"Oxford needs to focus on marketing the slow periods. The fact is Oxford has very busy periods during football weekends, graduation, orientation, festivals. And that accounts for 12 weekends out of the year," said Young.
During the meeting, Young focused on what to do with the remaining 40 weeks.
"Next is buying more advertising, focusing on the slow periods. We don't want to create traffic jams. We want to bring people in when it's slow, quiet weekends. Bring more people in and create more year-round jobs," added Young.
Several aldermen who were in attendance were pleased with the research.
Young added that with the right advertising strategies, Oxford could become one of the premier small towns in America.
