OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) — Members of Volunteer Oxford are providing an opportunity for people to volunteer for service projects as part of the 9/11 Day of Service.
"There are a lot of different things going on to really make us stop and think about as individuals how blessed we are," says Kelly Shannon, director of Volunteer Oxford. "One way to reflect on our blessings and also give something back is through volunteering."
This marks second year in a row for Volunteer Oxford and community partners to collaborate on the four-day event.
"We are...encouraging the public to step aside and just remember those that lost their lives on 9/11," adds Shannon. "Remember what they did — those that worked effortlessly to try and save lives and maybe lost their life in the process of doing it."
A dozen events are planned.
"We'll have two other events — on Sunday at the Mississippi Veterans Home in Oxford and then Tuesday at the Oxford Public Library," says Shannon. "We'll have firefighters, police officers and military servicemen reading books to Bramlett schoolchildren."
"There's something to be said about Mississippians going out of their way and participating in something that might not have had a direct effect to them," says Lauryn Duvalle, student/volunteer. "Everybody remembers that day and remembers how they felt."
Organizers say an act of kindness is a fitting way to honor those who died on that day.
They hope an increase in volunteers will help the events run more smoothly.
