MANTACHIE, Miss. (WTVA) -- On this eleventh anniversary of 9/11, a special flag flies in the town of Mantachie.

An American flag was raised Monday night in remembrance of all those who died on that day in 2001.

National Guardsman Specialist Thomas Underwood shipped the flag to his hometown all the way from Afghanistan.

The former firefighter's family say he raised the flag in Afghanistan before sending it home to the Greater Mantachie Fire Department.

"Words cannot describe what an honor it is and how touching it is," spokesperson Eileen Wooldridge said.

"Well, it's really special to us. We're proud he's over there fighting for our freedom, but we're gonna be more proud to have him home," Howard Underwood said.

Underwood's parents say they are extremely proud of their son who was in sixth grade on 9/11.

He would later join the National Guard when he was seventeen.

Specialist Underwood is wrapping up his first tour of duty.
