TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA)-- The final night of the Miss America competition is Sunday September 15, but Miss Mississippi Chelsea Rick has already made a splash.

On Tuesday, Rick won the Lifestyle and Fitness preliminary competition. Rick was also one of two winners of a new $5,000 STEM scholarship. The STEM scholarship was introduced for contestants who study and want to work in the fields of science, technology, engineering or math.

She spoke with Chairman and CEO, Sam Haskell about juggling medical school and physical fitness.

"It was very difficult to keep my physical fitness routine up.  But I had to do it," said Rick in a video posted on the Miss America Organization's Facebook page.

Rick credits her parents for teaching her at a young age the importance of nutrition and leading a healthy lifestyle.  She also shared her secret to getting competition ready.

"I did a lot of cardio, a lot of strength training and then, also, a little bit of confidence on the stage helped a little bit," said Rick.

On Sunday the Fulton native will take to the Miss America stage and by doing so, fulfill a lifelong dream. She spoke with WTVA about her journey shortly after winning her Miss Mississippi crown.

"It's been a journey of perseverance, I think that is really a key word to dictate what my journey has been like to become Miss Mississippi. I competed five times to get to this point," said Rick.

Miss Mississippi may already have a spot in the top 15. All of the Miss America contestants created a video describing why they should be Miss America 2014.  But only one person can be voted America's choice.  If you're wondering whether Rick gathered enough votes to become America's choice, you'll have to wait until Sunday night to find out.

You can watch the Miss America pageant live on ABCWTVA at 8pm Central.
