ITAWAMBA CO., Miss. (WTVA) — Two drivers involved in a wreck that shut down westbound traffic on Highway 78 in Itawamba County near the Mississippi Welcome Center at Tremont, are recovering from minor injuries.

Two 18-wheelers collided on the highway around 4:40 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Investigators say when they arrived on the scene, it appeared Darreyl Hunter, 40, of Cordova, Ala. was traveling west in a 2012 Kenworth, when he apparently ran into the back of a 2003 Freightliner, operated by Samuel N. Montford, 67, of Wrightsville, Ga.

Authorities say Hunter had to be extricated from his vehicle, but he received only minor injuries.

Montford also received only minor injuries.

Both drivers were wearing a seatbelt.

The west bound lanes of US 78 were closed for approximately seven hours while crews cleaned up the scene.

Traffic was rerouted thru the welcome center.
