FULTON, Miss. (WTVA) -- Fans poured into the Davis Event Center at Itawamba Community College to hear music that is as much a part of this area's culture as as any other musical form.
That music is gospel bluegrass.
"I think it's heart-felt, the emotion and the feeling, the sincerity in the music. We live in some trying times these days -- the world in general, not just in our country. And people are looking for something to grab a hold of," said bluegrass musician Doyle Lawson.
His group, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, has helped with this benefit concert for many years.
If it's bluegrass music the fans were looking for, they certainly found it Saturday night.
The concert was held to raise money for the Regional Rehabilitation Center in Tupelo.
"It is the biggest fundraiser for the Rehab Center. But let me tell you, I don't know how many of [ICC President David] Cole's students and staff are volunteering today. But we couldn't do this event without the staff and volunteers of ICC. We're really appreciative for what they do for us," said Kay Matthews of the Regional Rehabilitation Center in Tupelo.
"We're paying dues for being citizens of the region. And we greatly admire the work that the Regional Rehabilitation does for the region under the direction of Kay Matthews here. They provide rehabilitation services for people at no charge," said Cole.
All indications were that this would be another sellout crowd to hear gospel bluegrass legends like the Paul Williams Trio.
Organizers say they raised about $50,000 for the Regional Rehab Center last year.
