JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) -- Eleven organizations have received grants to improve the lives of the children across the state, assist veterans and families of active military personnel, and assist individuals with disabilities.
Volunteer Mississippi announced a total of $2.4 million in grants Thursday from the Corporation for National and Community Service.
The funds will support the work of 581 AmeriCorps members across the state.
Among the projects receiving funds are 29 volunteers in the Grenada School District who will work with students in kindergarten through the eighth grade on math and reading.
The University of Mississippi College Corps will receive funds to all 74 students to assist local and nonprofit organizations in providing homework help and food security assistance in Oxford and Lafayette County.
AmeriCorps volunteers agree to donate one or two years to the organization.
