MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WTVA) -- A bill to allow the Franklin County, Alabama schools to implement a volunteer emergency school security force has been sent to the governor.
The state senate approved the measure on Tuesday.
The bill, authored by State Representative Johnny Mack Morrow of Red Bay, would allow school officials to create the security force with current and former employees and local residents.
Under the measure, school officials would compile a list of names and submit them to the sheriff and local police for review.
Those people would be part of an emergency security force to be activated in the event of a potential threat.
The people would be classified as reserve law enforcement officers and undergoing training necessary for the job.
They would also have the authority to make arrests.
The bill instructs the district and law enforcement to create a plan to implement the use of the security force, including the use and storage of weapons.
School employees, including bus drivers, not selected for the force would receive self-defense training.
The costs of training would be paid by the school district.
