WEST POINT, Miss. (WTVA) — Authorities have placed an inmate who escaped from the Clay County Jail Saturday morning back behind bars.
Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott said deputies apprehended Lorenzo Chandler, 36, about a quarter-mile from the jail at a relative's home in West Point.
According to the sheriff's department, Chandler walked out of jail wearing civilian clothes sometime before 8 a.m.
Scott said he was back in jail less than two hours later, arrested without incident.
Law enforcement said he was in jail for utility fraud.
The sheriff said an internal investigation will determine how Chandler got out.
"The jail facility itself is secure, but the policy and procedures regarding [our] staff is what I'm looking at," Scott said.
Scott said it could have been caused by someone failing to properly secure the inmate.
Chandler is expected to be charged with felony escape pending the outcome of the investigation.
