WEST POINT, Miss. (WTVA) -- A popular destination in the city of West Point will soon be undergoing some changes.
The city is doing its part to provide safety and an incentive to those who frequent Sally Kate Winters Park.
Enhancements to Sally Kate Winters Park are scheduled to begin soon, so when people visit the park they will have access to free wireless internet as Wi-Fi access will soon be installed.
"If anyone comes out to the park with their laptops or their smartphones, they'll be able to have Wi-Fi access," said Dwight Prisock, superintendent of the city's water & light department. "We'd like for them to come out and sit on the benches under the gazebo or wherever they would like."
"Having the Wi-Fi is really going to be helpful to people in the park," said Melanie Busby, West Point resident. "[Those] who just maybe need to do homework or work on a report [quickly] before they go [to work] and don't have time when they're coming into town."
Besides connecting the Wi-Fi, the city of West Point will be installing nine infrared cameras in and around Sally Kate Winters Park.
This way when people come here to use the park during the evening time or late at night, they will feel safe knowing surveillance systems are in place.
"We just want to get cameras here so we can see who is doing what and provide a little level of safety for all of the people that want to visit the park," added Prisock.
Having cameras will not only help deter crime but also serve as a valuable resource for law enforcement.
"[We think people will like] knowing there is a camera out here, if something were to happen everything will be recorded," adds Busby. "[If that happens,] people can find whoever did whatever or to a car or anything like that."
Before the Wi-Fi is connected and security cameras are installed, some work needs to be completed before everything is fully operational.
"We've got to install some underground power and additional poles to mount the cameras up," added Prisock.
Plans call for the work to be completed sometime in the month of February.
