JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) -- Members of the Headquarters, 223rd Engineer Battalion, based in West Point, and the unit’s Aberdeen-based forward support company will return to Mississippi from overseas active duty service at noon on Saturday, September 29 at Columbus Air Force Base.

Collectively, approximately 160 Soldiers are returning to the Magnolia State after serving for one year in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

The guardsmen will arrive in Columbus from Fort Bliss, Texas via Mississippi Air National Guard C-17 aircraft from Jackson’s 172nd Airlift Wing.

While in theater, the 223rd Engineers were responsible for conducting and supporting route clearance missions within their assigned operations areas.

The soldiers were also instrumental in training Afghanistan National Army troops in advanced combat engineer operations.
