TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) -- Twenty years ago, a group of four ladies got the idea to make their own quilting club.

"Somebody who was wiser than we were said, 'Why don't you learn to quilt and do them yourself?'" quilter Peggy Wooten said.

These ladies are now called the Cedar Bluff Quilters.

"It's relaxing. It's a hobby. It's relaxing," quilter Debra McCarter said.

The quilters held a quilt show Sunday.

They showed dozens of quilts that were contributed by themselves as well as guests.

Wooten said having shows is something new to the group.

This is only their second one.

"We don't really know if this is the way you have a quilting show or not," Wooten said.

The ladies quilt together every Tuesday.

They said it takes them quite a while to finish a project.

"If it is a really difficult quilt and a lot of quilting to do on it, it will take us 4-6 weeks," Wooten said.

Wooten said she hopes Sunday's show will bring in new members.

"Anytime we hear of someone retiring we say, 'Why don't you come and join us? You're not going to have anything else to do,'" Wooten said.

Quilter Maxine Hamilton did just that.

She joined the group two years ago.

She says quilting reminds her of her childhood.

"I feel I'm back close to my family now when I quilt with the ladies here," Hamilton said.

Many of the Cedar Bluff Quilters make these blankets for their loved ones.

"My children, my husband [and] my family take them as fast as I can make them," McCarter said.

McCarter said her heart goes into every stitch of the quilts she makes for her family.

"They like the fact that I make them by hand and that it's a gift that I made them," McCarter said. "Instead of buying a gift."

These quilters call what they do feel good quilting.

They don't take any money for what they make.

"We never keep a penny for ourselves," Wooten said. "It all goes to the center. Believe me, it needs the money."

She says it's that attitude that makes what they do well worth it.
