WEST POINT, Miss. (WTVA) - It was a close call for an elementary school in West Point.

A man driving a pick-up truck ran into a tree on Main Street Saturday.

West Point police said that the man was driving south on Main Street when his brakes failed and he went across the Doogan Nursing Home parking lot.

He ran into a tree, which knocked an electrical service line down and caused a fire on the roof of a classroom at East Side Elementary.

Even though there were no reports of injuries, crews are working to restore the building before classes resume.

"Saturday afternoon we removed all the electrical service from the school," said  Dwight Prisock, superintendent of West Point City Schools. "The school hired electricians that came in. We inspected all the electrical panels before we re-energized the school to try to be absolutely sure that there are no issues unresolved before the little kids come back from New Year's vacation."

School officials say that the damage will be repaired by the time teachers report on January 7th.
