ACKERMAN, Miss. (WTVA) — Food drives are taking place all across Mississippi with the holidays now here.

A food drive in Ackerman reached out to schools to help meet the needs in the county.

The Food for Families Food Drive will bring some joy to many families thanks in part to the younger generation.

Volunteers organized non-perishable food items that were donated right up until 6 p.m. at the Choctaw County Library.

They were given as part of the Pack the Trailer event which coincides with the Food for Families Food Drive.

"Like it says in the Bible, it's more a blessing to give than to receive," said Tony Steadman, Ackerman resident. "So, we figured we'd give to those that are not as fortunate as us and try to help anybody the way we can."

"We support this worthy cause and bring some food down. We're Christians, and we like to remember the season, what the season is really all about," said Merle Temple, Tupelo resident.

Choctaw County is just like several other counties across the state where the need for food is increasing.

"Broken Wings Ministry has a lot of clients coming to their food pantry. They have new clients coming in every week. So, more and more food is needed," said July Hughes, county coordinator for the MSU Extension Service.

In an effort to get more food donated this year, organizers decided to do something a little bit different by including the schools in Choctaw County. Classes competed against one another for about three weeks to see which class could raise the most food.

"We collected a lot more food this year than we have last year," said Hughes.

It's that food that will help ensure people don't go without a hot cooked meal over the holiday season.

The food collected will be distributed out to the people of Choctaw County who present a voucher given to them by their pastor or minister from their church.
