OKOLONA, Miss. (WTVA) -- Teachers and students in Okolona are trying out some new teaching and learning methods this year.

Motivational speaker Larry Bell visited some Okolona schools Thursday to show them they can excel in school if they put their minds to it.

"If they're willing to work hard and apply themselves, they can do anything," Bell said. "I tell kids you don't get less brains because you're poor. You can do anything you're willing to work hard to do."
Bell not only spoke to elementary school children and high schoolers but their parents as well.

He is known to teach schools strategies that raise their test scores.

Okolona school leaders believe the students will benefit from these new techniques.

"I do believe that trying these proven strategies that have helped moved scores in other schools, other districts will help us as well," Okolona Elementary School Principal LaShanda Howkins said.

Bell says the Okolona School District invited him to come after hearing him speak at a school in Tunica.
