OKOLONA, Miss. (WTVA) -- It's a work in progress.

That's one way to describe a restoration project underway at the Confederate cemetery in Okolona.

Work began two years ago to spruce up more than 800 graves.

The Chamber of Commerce along with the Sons of Confederate Veterans volunteers have strived to raise money for fencing, lighting and other necessities.

The men buried at the cemetery are those who were killed at the Battle of Shiloh and the Battle of Farmington among others.

"We're just trying to get it back up to where it will look like a nice cemetery and want to try to keep it that way," said volunteer Don Houston.

A major hospital was set up in Okolona during the Civil War.

The wounded were transported to the town by train.
