HOULKA, Miss. (WTVA) -- Houlka native Manda Griffin came home Sunday afternoon.

She came back to open a medical clinic, something that residents here say is much-needed.

It had the air of a family reunion where there was free food and drinks for all.

Understandbly, her family members are proud of their native daughter who has come home to provide medical care for everyone.

"We normally have to go to Bruce, Houston, Tupelo and Pontotoc, but this will be a blessing," said Edna Griffin of Houlka.

"It's just good to have the convenience of having a facility like this close to home," said Kolby Griffin, the owner's son.

Since 2007, Manda Griffin has served in the city of Sherman.

Now she has come home to serve her hometown.

"There's always a need in any rural area for health care. Being from this area, there's a lot of disparities we all have to deal with, especially for African Americans. Diabetes, hypertension...just to name a few," said Manda Griffin, the owner of the medical clinic.

She says her family has a history of those diseases which makes the move even more special for her.

Make no mistake, though; many in the town say this clinic is a welcomed sight.

"It's been coming for a while. Mrs. Griffin came and talked to us earlier in the year and showed interest in coming," Houlka Mayor Jimmy Kelly said. "We've been working behind the scenes to get this done as they've redone the building to get this thing going. We're just looking forward to having a clinic in our town."

One town's gain is perhaps another's loss as Manda Griffin will no longer offer her services in Sherman, where she has been the past few years.

"She will really make good over here in Houlka. She's a really nice lady and she really cares about her customers," said Norma Tollison, one of Griffin's patients from Sherman.

"I just want to thank God for giving us this opportunity. I want to thank the town of Houlka for allowing us to come into the community and provide health care services to the area. We just want to be a positive aspect to the community," said Griffin.
