SPARTA, Miss. (WTVA) -- Hali Beth sorts through photos of Holly Bear which is a 9-year-old Golden Retriever.
They were the same age and always napped together.
"I know she affected a lot of people's lives, not just ours," said pet owner Ann Brand.
Ann Brand or "Momma Brand" has Hali Best and sister Hanna Grace call her is going to miss Boo.
"You go out the door, you expect to see her and then you think about it all over again that she gave her life for us," added Brand.
It was Sunday just before dark. The girls wanted to go get a sweet treat from Ann's Beauty Shop. A Water Moccasin also known as a Cotton Mouth was in their path.
"All I could see was a wide open mouth and fangs and then Boo got her," said Brand.
Boo and old friend Birdie jumped to their defense.
" It was coiled and ready to strike."
Boo was bit five times and died.
Birdie was bit once, but survived.
"My Boo just grabbed the snake and took the bite for me. I honestly think it would have got me or the girls if she hadn't done that," added Brand.
Now, Birdie sits alone without her life long buddy while this family mourns the loss of more than just man's best friend.
"You go out the door, you expect to see her and then think about it all over again that she gave her life for us," said Brand.
Jimmy Brand struggles with the loss as well.
"Pretty hard. Pretty hard. All of us miss her so much. She was a pretty good buddy," said Brand.
She was a buddy and truly a best friend to this little girl who just can't believe she's gone.
"You know that's a natural part of life is life and death, but you know you can't help but miss her," added Brand.
