OKOLONA, Miss. (WTVA) -- An Okolona man who died in the line of duty will be honored for his sacrifice.

A monument will be unveiled at the Okolona Fire Department on Saturday.

Archie Carouthers was a full-time Okolona firefighter when he was killed battling a blaze some 32 years ago.

Fire Chief Terry Tucker says he and other members of the fire department have strived to raise money to erect the monument.

Archie Carouthers was helping to douse flames at the Hilltop Shopping Center on Highway 45 North when he was struck on the head by falling timbers.

Chief Tucker says it's important to remember those who lose their lives in the line of duty.

"This Monday will be testament to him and a testament that you'll sort of use your head, so you make sure you go home at night to your family," said Chief Tucker.

Chief Tucker says the monument will also bear the names of others who may lose their lives in the future-although he hopes that never happens.
