DERMA, Miss. (WTVA) -- People showed up at Town Hall in Derma Wednesday night for a public meeting about the future of the town's post office.
They were concerned the federal government was closing their post office.
It turns out that won't happen.
Instead, the post office will only be open two hours a day six days a week.
"The new deal on the post office is the best alternative that we had presented to us because closing the post office would be detrimental to the survival of small towns all around the country and especially our town," said Mayor Dock Gabbert.
The reduction in hours left at least one woman relieved.
"Well, I'm thankful that they aren't closing the post office and all, but the thing I regret most about it is the hours because we run into people we've known most of our lives and do visit with people that we don't see other places that we see at our post office," said Bebe Maxwell.
"We've lost our schools, and the post office is about the last thing that keeps us bonded together as a community, and that was our main concern...," said Gabbert.
The Derma post office will now only operate Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. and on Saturday from 7 a.m. until 9 a.m.
