LEE COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) -- A Tupelo man remains at North Mississippi Medical Center after nearly drowning in a lake east of Plantersville, according to the Lee County sheriff.

Sheriff Jim Johnson said deputies received a call at 3:37 p.m. Saturday that an individual had gone into a lake in Lakewood Estates, located just off State Park Road.

When deputies arrived, three of them went in to help rescue the man and pull him out. Johnson said the deputies attended to him until medics arrived.

Johnson identified the man as Robert Burns of Tupelo. Burns' condition is not known at this time.

The sheriff said Burns and others were fishing at the lake when the incident took place. He said Burns told the others he wanted to go for a quick swim, but then did not come back up.

We'll have more on this developing story as it becomes available.
