PONTOTOC, Miss. (WTVA) -- The Mississippi Highway Patrol late Wednesday investigated a traffic accident involving an Amish buggy and car on Highway 341 in Pontotoc County near the Algoma Community.

An MHP spokesperson confirms they responded to the scene around 3:30 p.m.

He says the air ambulance has been dispatched to the scene.

The MHP says when they arrived on the scene it appeared that Lauren L. Purdon, 19, of Thaxton, was traveling south on 341 in a 2004 Nissan Altima when her vehicle apparently collided into a horse and buggy.

Officials have identified the driver of the buggy as Joe M. Hostetler of Algoma.

Authorities say he was transported to NMMC by ambulance with serious and life threatening injures.

We are told that the horse pulling the buggy had to be put down.
