OXFORD, Miss. (WTVA) -- Lafayette County authorities are investigating the death of a Gulfport man.

Investigators say deputies found the body of Zacharias Herculese McClendon, 25, at a residence on County Road 140 in the College Hill community around 3 a.m. Wednesday.

Deputies were dispatched to the home over a welfare concern.

Authorities are not saying how McClendon died but say they do expect foul play in his death.

McClendon was a graduate student at the University of Missisippi. The university released the following statement:

"The university family is shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Zach McClendon.  We feel pain and loss any time one of our students is taken from us.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends and we, as a university family, will do all that we can to support them."

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and Oxford police are assisting the investigation.
