Escapees captured, charged with capital murder

LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WTVA) -- The Lamar County Sheriff's Department has issued arrest warrants for two escaped Forrest County inmates on charges of capital murder.

James Robert Martin and David Bass are suspected of stabbing to death Ada Smith, 95,on Sunday in her home in the Progress community near Purvis in Lamar County.

WDAM TV in Hattiesburg reports evidence gathered from the scene links Martin and Bass to the break in and murder.

Late Tuesday afternoon, U. S. Marshals arrested the men at a bar on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

Martin and Bass escaped from a Mississippi Department of Correction Work Center near Hattiesburg on Saturday.

Martin was serving a five-year sentence for grand larceny out of Monroe County.

Bass was serving time for burglary in Lee County.
