NEW ALBANY, Miss. (WTVA) - Laptops now sit on the desks of hundreds of students at New Albany Elementary School.

Close to 500 students in grades three through five have the internet-based learning available to them anytime throughout the school day.

Classrooms previously had to share iPads.

Teacher Tammy Kirkland said, "The fact we can take them out at any time is great. If we get to math and there's a web site that I need supplemental practice for we can bring it up. We also have the ability to compose on them. We've not brought that into the curriculum yet but it's coming and many, many other things."

On hand to see the students in action were CREATE Foundation and Toyota Mississippi officials.

Toyota provided more than $100,000 to this school alone as part of a $50 million commitment over a 10 year period to schools in counties represented by the PUL Alliance.

Doug Formby with Toyota Mississippi said, "It's very exciting to me when I looked in the faces of these young kids today. They're about to have an opportunity that their predecessors really didn't have."

Along with the Toyota grant, the school system itself has recently invested close to $1 million in internet infrastructure and equipment.

Superintendent Jackie Ford said, "Every elementary teacher in this building, kindergarten through fifth grade, has their own personal laptop they can take home. It's the same laptop students are working with."

The superintendent says with limited resources it's sometimes hard to keep up with how quickly technology is changing the way students learn.

That's why he says continued partnerships like the one with Toyota are so imperative.
