SHANNON, Miss. (WTVA) - Some Shannon Elementary students recently helped clean their school gymnasium after a basketball game was played there the night before.
The building serves as both a gymnasium and auditorium.
One student said, "We do exercises, basketball and kickball games, and a lot of other stuff."
Another student told us, "We always get to exercise, talk real loud, and do whatever we want."
Having events there sometimes means a public address system is needed.
But the current system is not reliable.
It was damaged by a leaking roof a while back and is more than ten years old.
Venetia Mallory with Shannon Elementary School said, "Our gymnasium is used for more than athletics. We use it for choir and drama. The community comes in and uses the gymnasium for different events that benefit our children as well. The sound system needs to be updated and reliable."
By going online to a special page or texting a vote, the school could win up to $50,000 in grant money as they compete with other schools around the nation.
Officials at the school say it would mean a lot to them to be able to win this grant.
Mallory said, "All schools need all the help they can get. But our school is in a rural area and we have a lot of low-income families. We would love to be able to give our children the best education and best experience when they come to school."
The school is trailing right now, so every vote counts.
