TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — Its official name is Positive Behavior Intervention System.

Throughout the halls of Pontotoc Middle School there are reminders of what's expected of students and the rewards each student and groups of students have achieved because of positive behavior.

Principal Gwyn Russell said, "We have posted expectations. You'll see them throughout the halls, the restrooms and the cafeteria. You're also hearing them taught in the classrooms. We do that through social skills and areas we might see weaknesses in. We also do it by listening to our students and observing what they're doing."

What's happening is a big difference in the overall environment of learning, according to teacher Amy Dearman.

Dearman said, "As far as a teacher, there are some changes I've seen. Instead of correcting in a negative way we move toward the positive. We show and explain and model what we'd like from our students. They respond just as adults respond from a positive model in our lives. That's how we handle these situations."

This is not to say discipline isn't a part of the school.

Action is taken when necessary.

Supporters of the positive behavior system say students are taking more responsibility like in the cafeteria, where groups can win table of the week for things like picking up after themselves to have the cleanest table.

Parents say they see a difference in their children and their friends.

Parent LaGracia Davis said, "The way they're setting up things means they're giving the kids pride. If they're responsible for things in the school they'll take pride in taking care of it. You'll then see it in the classwork because they like the positive impact it brings."

This is the first year for the Positive Behavior Intervention System at Pontotoc Middle School.
